Direwolves H.C. was organized to give beginner and recreational level adult ice hockey players an opportunity to play a competitive yet relaxed game with other players of a similar skill level. DHC's goal is to provide a unique and quality hockey experience by focusing on the following goals and objectives (click each to expand):
I. Skill Level ParityOpen or CloseIn most Rec/Novice leagues and "rat hockey" games, there are typically several advanced players (or teams) and balancing competitiveness is often a problem. Novice-level skaters often find themselves outmatched by elite players that have either been skating since early childhood or played competitively at a high school, college, or even junior-pro level and these players easily dominate games. While beginners certainly can benefit and learn from having more experienced players around, the best development opportunities come in games when the skill level spread between the players on the ice is close enough to ensure a competitive game for all players.
At our two weekly DHC games, the skill level is strictly controlled to ensure not only even team parity but also that the skill level differential between individual skaters encourages a competitive opportunity for everyone to practice and gain experience.
II. Fixed Day/Time Game ScheduleOpen or CloseMany leagues set schedules that often do not work for busy adults - games move across various week nights and jump to weekends, typically are only played very late at night, and often change month-to-month or season-to-season as child/youth programs begin and end. Adult players often find that they sign up for a season and have to miss several games due to schedule conflicts from inconvenient changes to game days and times.
DHC plays two weekly games with a fixed time slot - our members and subs can choose either our Saturday a.m. game or our Wednesday p.m. game (or both). Members do not have to commit to a season schedule in advance and instead choose to play one or both games on a week-by-week basis.
III. Reliable & Organized Club SystemOpen or ClosePlayers who are familiar with the "rat" or pick up hockey scene in Chicago have likely found out the hard way that many games are poorly organized/attended. It is not uncommon for dedicated players to drive an hour for a game only to find that there aren't enough players, there are too many players, or there are no goalies. Other more popular games require you to show up an hour or more in advance to guarantee your spot since advanced registration is not an option.
With DHC, players have a confirmed spot in advance and know exactly what to expect each week. Our member/substitute online registration system works extremely well to ensure full teams (with goalies) and a great amount of ice time per skater. We cap our games at 20 skaters for an hour game (and 26 for our occasional hour and a half special games). In addition to monitoring skill level parity, our members/subs also regulate the length of shifts in an "honor system" from the bench so that no player can hog ice time. The result is a great hour of hockey with a fun and competitive group of players at a fair price.
